The Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the Jacksonville Jaguars this afternoon with a chance to extend their winning streak to four games. The Eagles were in full control during this contest, but Jacksonville was able to capitalize on a fumble recovery to put a scare into the Eagles. However, Nakobe Dean was able to make a game saving interception to help them secure the victory 28-23.
The Eagles started this game off hot after a Jacksonville turnover on a punt return, Jalen Hurts found Barkley in the back of the end zone for his first receiving touchdown in Lincoln Financial Field as an Eagle. On the offensive side Philly had it working throughout this contest, but Nick Sirianni left nine points off the board by going for a two-point conversion three times instead of taking the field goal. Fortunately for the Eagles Sirianni’s aggressiveness did not cost them this game.
Philly cannot afford to leave points on the board next week against the Dallas Cowboys, even against inferior competition everyone gets paid to make tackles. The Eagles have to take the points when they are available leave the two-point conversion for plays when its needed.
This contest had no business being as close as it was and it only ended up this way because of a touchdown scored off a Saquon Barkley fumble and the Jags converting on two two-point conversions. The Eagles cannot afford to give their opponents hope especially in games like this one where they dominate the majority of the contest.
On the defensive side this was another very good game for them, they finally got turnovers (three) in this contest and were able to set their offense up in good position to put points on the board. Over these past four games the Eagles have been playing complimentary football and it seems like Sirianni is trusting his coordinators Kellen Moore (Offensive Coordinator) and Vic Fangio (Defensive Coordinator) more. As a result, that has allowed Philly to regain their dominance in these last four contests.
The Eagles will now prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys next week in AT& T Stadium, and despite the Cowboys injury woes they are still a talented team who will take full advantage of Philly’s mistakes.
The Eagles have to continue to be balanced and continue to mix in run plays (rushed for 225 yards in this contest) even when it is not working. Today against the Jaguars the Eagles were able to create a couple of big plays by using the run game first, and using that to open up the field for the deep pass. Late in this game that created a touchdown opportunity for DeVonta Smith who made a beautiful one handed catch to seal this game for the Eagles. They will have to do that against an aggressive Dallas defense. This maybe the game where the Eagles may want to use Saquon Barkley in the screen game as well. That should open up the middle of the field for Jalen Hurts’ arm, and if Philly can implement these things into their gameplan next week. They should be able to get their seventh win of the season, and make another statement in the competitive NFC East.
