After falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night, the Philadelphia 76ers faced the Chicago Bulls for the final time this season. Thanks to a 51-point scoring explosion in the third quarter, the Sixers were able to beat Chicago 157-137.
The Sixers finally had most of their talent available tonight as Joel Embiid (35 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and had 7 assists in this contest) and Paul George (28 points) returned in this contest and Philly’s offense immediately looked a whole lot better. The Sixers’ explosive duo combined for 63 of Philly’s 157 points and they looked well rested in this game. Embiid put on a show in three quarters of work in this contest and he had it working on both sides of the court and created multiple high-percentage scoring opportunities for his teammates. In addition, if Embiid continues to perform like this for the nine remaining games in this season, then Philly will rocket up the standings in the loaded Eastern Conference and get out of the 2026 Play-In Tournament.
George finally returned from a 25-game suspension and had an explosive fourth quarter to really show that he is back in form. When George has his shot working it adds another dimension to Philly’s offensive and defensive capabilities. He blew up multiple offensive possessions for Chicago with his active hands and made six three-pointers in this contest. When George is on the floor the Sixers are one of the most dangerous teams in the league because he can take advantage of Embiid and Tyrese Maxey’s gravity and create his own shot. Which will be pivotal in the postseason as well against some of the top teams in the conference.
Despite the offensive explosion from Embiid and George, Chicago continued to fight in this game and while the score may not indicate it, they fought throughout this contest. The Sixers were just able to overwhelm Chicago and stifle them with their defense. Josh Giddey scored 23 points in this game, and the Sixers had a challenging time stopping him in this game. However, they were able to put VJ Edgecombe on him and that limited his effectiveness in this game which stopped their offense. Philly plays way more aggressively on the defensive end when George and Embiid are on the floor and Chicago could not make the Sixers pay for their mistakes. The Sixers forced 13 turnovers in this game and were able to turn those mistakes into points which was the difference in this contest.
When the Sixers needed it most VJ Edgecombe stepped up in this contest he scored 22 points in this game and scored 10 points in the third quarter which led to a 51-point performance for them (New season high). Edgecombe benefited from Embiid, George, and Maxey’s absence. It has helped him gain confidence and be the main scoring option for his team. He has unlocked his offensive game and if he continues to develop during his rookie season and beyond the Sixers will make a deep playoff run this season.
The Sixers will now prepare for a battle with the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night, another team that is behind the Sixers in the playoff standings. However, Charlotte is one of the hottest teams in the NBA and Philly cannot afford to take them lightly on Saturday. They will need to limit their turnovers, win, or keep the rebounding battle competitive, and cash in on the high-percentage shooting opportunities created from their ball movement. Implementing these things into their game plan on Saturday will put them in great position to win their 41st game of the season and continue to build momentum heading into the playoffs.
