The Philadelphia 76ers were riding high after beating the Memphis Grizzlies in a thriller on Monday night. They faced a game Wizards squad who were looking to stop the streaking Sixers. They used a late game offensive explosion to beat the Sixers 106-103.
The game did not start out well for the Sixers they looked like a team that had to compete in an overtime thriller just a few days ago. They could not hit shots that they usually make, and they were sloppy on the defensive end as well. The Wizards took full advantage they were led by Kyle Kuzma who scored 24-points. Philly had no answers for him, he got what he wanted from the field. He made the Sixers pay for daring to give him any open space. Thanks to him the Wizards were threatening to run the Sixers off their home-floor.
Despite Kuzma’s offensive explosion. The Sixers weathered the early storm and made some adjustments at half-time to retake the lead late in the third quarter. That was thanks to Joel Embiid (27-points) and Tyrese Maxey (23-points) who combined for 49 of Philly’s 103-points. The Wizards had no answers for them. Both got what they wanted from the field and made them pay for leaving them open. This budding chemistry between Maxey and Embiid has helped the Sixers as they have won 15 of their last 19-games and have them rocketing up the Eastern Conference standings.
Philly could not get points when it mattered the most besides a late-game three by Danny Green. Philly’s inability to hit any other shots in the last two-minutes of the fourth quarter. Ultimately was their downfall. Montrezl Harrell hit eight shots in the fourth quarter and that was the difference in the game. The Sixers could not buy one and the Wizards made them when it mattered.
Philly will now prepare for a prime-time match-up with the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. They will need someone to step-up besides Maxey, Embiid, and Harris. Additionally, they will need to play better on the defensive end if they want to stifle Luka Doncic and get their 32nd win of the season.
