The Philly Sports Scene is All The Way Up!!!

By: Kylan Watson

For the last few years the sports teams in Philadelphia were mostly laughing stocks and an embarrassment to the city. However, because of an infusion of young talent the Philly sports scene has been reinvigorated. Each of the four major teams in Philly are led by young stars.

Carson Wentz is the face of the Eagles, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons are the new dynamic duo for the 76ers, Rhys Hoskins is a rising star for the Phillies, and Shayne (Ghost) Gostisbehere for the Flyers. Each of these stars are leaving their mark, on their respective teams and bringing some much-needed hope and energy to the Philadelphia sports scene.

Wentz led the Eagles to a 13-3 record, which was one of the best seasons in franchise history. Wentz’ season was cut short due to an ACL injury. Before the injury Wentz completed 60.2% of his passes, threw for 3,276 yards, completed 33 touchdown passes, and had seven interceptions. He was having an MVP caliber season.

He was replaced by Nick Foles. Foles would lead to the Eagles to their first super bowl title in franchise history, but it was the leadership and play of Carson Wentz, that laid the groundwork for the Eagles to be a championship contender.

The Eagles championship win has lit the competitive fires of the other teams here in Philly. The Flyers are currently 6-0-1, and the 76ers are 7-1 since the Eagles won the title in early February.

The 76ers have been playing great basketball lately. They have a 32-26 record and are the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference standings. The play of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons has propelled the Sixers to a seven-game win streak which ended when they were crushed by the Wizards last night.   Both are proving to be a dynamic duo that should help the 76ers become a threat in the East

The Flyers are one of the most consistent teams in Philly. They have not been to the championship game in eight years. However, the Flyers do have a solid core of young talent, led by Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere. The Flyers have a 33-19 record and are two games out of first place in the Metropolitan Division. The team is on a five-game winning streak and are putting it all together just in time for the playoff push.

The Philadelphia Phillies have not played a meaningful game yet, but they are long past the days of their 2008 World Series championship victory. The team just hired a new manager in Gabe Kapler, who will hopefully bring some energy to a very young roster.

The Phillies need an ace in their starting pitching rotation. They are very reliant on pitcher Aaron Nola who is still looking to find his place in the Phillies pitching rotation. He will be the opening day starter for the Phillies, but he has a long way to go in his development as a pitcher.

The Phillies also made some noise in the offseason by signing first baseman Carlos Santana to a three-year $60 million-dollar deal. The hope for Santana is that he can add some more power to the Phillies line-up along with Left Fielder Rhys Hoskins.

The Phillies are hoping that the acquisition of Santana is the first of a major signing spree. Most experts and fans are not expecting a big season out of the Phillies this year. However, the Phillies will have a lot of money to spend,  to help complete their process and be a prime destination for free agents in 2019 like Bryce Harper.

Each of the four major sports teams in Philly are led by some very young talent. Most of the talent are 25 years-old and younger. Each of the teams need to add some more veteran talent to their respective rosters. However, as rappers Fat Joe and French Montana would say the Philly sports scene is all the way up and should be for a very long time!!!

  1. I haven’t been happy or impressed with the sports teams in Philadelphia in the last several years, more like a decade to be honest. Philly sports have finally jumped back into the winning game where legit success is starting to be shown. The very first sign of this was with the Eagles winning their FIRST Super Bowl title. I look forward to more success like that coming from my hometown & I look forward to what these teams have to offer to sports fans. 215 Let’s Go!
