After beating the Dallas Cowboys last week, the Philadelphia Eagles headed to Kansas City for a super bowl rematch against a Chiefs team that was desperate for a victory. Despite this game being a defensive battle the Eagles took advantage of a Chiefs turnover to beat them 20-17 for their second victory of the season.
The Eagles did not have it on the offensive side throughout this game; they once again could not find enough consistency in their scheme during today’s contest. The two times they did the running game was heavily involved in those two drives.
They went up against one of the best defensive play callers in the league in Steve Spagnulo and it is only the second game of the season, but Philly will need to start with a more balanced game on the offensive end. Additionally, they will benefit from getting Dallas Goedert back his absence was apparent during this afternoon’s contest. He is Jalen Hurts’ security blanket and helps them attack the middle of the field with his ability to always find the holes in a defensive scheme. Once that happens the Eagles offense should start picking it up once again, but their talent in all phases of the game helped them beat the Chiefs.
Both defenses came to play in this contest, they were able to get stops when they needed to. However, the Eagles defense were able to come up with two difference making plays in this game, they stopped the Chiefs early in the third quarter which resulted in a turnover on downs and great field position for Philly, and Andrew Makuba was able to pick off Patrick Mahomes thanks to the ball deflecting off Travis Kelce’s hands. Those two plays sealed this game for the Eagles they scored 10 points from them, which helped them seal a three-point victory against Kansas City.
Jordan Davis put his stamp on this game, he was able to keep Patrick Mahomes from escaping the pocket in the second half and while he did not have a sack in this game his penetration created multiple sack opportunities for Philly. Vic Fangio (Philly’s Defensive Coordinator) was able to send more pressure with multiple blitz packages which kept Mahomes confused enough to miss wide open receivers. Despite the fact he was able to connect and make the game a three-point game, Philly had control of this game throughout the second half, and the Chiefs could not take it from them.
Once again when the Eagles needed it most Hurts found DeVonta Smith on a deep ball the only pass he was able to complete that was over six yards in this game, and it led to a game sealing touchdown run by Hurts via the “Tush Push.”
There are times throughout the regular season in the NFL when a team must push through despite things not working, and this was that game for the Eagles. Sometimes you have to win in an ugly manner and this depending on how you look at it is Philly’s second ugly victory of the season, but they all count the same in the win column.
Throughout the week Nick Sirianni told his team they must push through adversity, and they made their coach proud because they were able to succeed through a lot of it throughout this contest, and now they will prepare to face the Los Angeles Rams next week in Philly.
The Rams are another team with an explosive offense who can take advantage of the fact that the Eagles really do not have a solid number two corner. Adoree Jackson played better in this contest, but he will have to be just as solid against Puka Nacua and the rest of LA’s explosive pass catchers. Philly will need to put a lot of pressure on Matt Stafford to create turnover opportunities, and the Eagles will need to have a balance offensive scheme if they want to win their third game of the season on Sunday afternoon.
